Mary River Month 2017

Mary River Month 2017

From Sunday 24th September to Saturday 11th November 2017 Mary River Month includes a wide range of activities, field days, forums, walks and talks throughout the Mary River Catchment, culminating with the Mary River Festival in Kandanga. Download the full Mary River Month calendar here.

World Rivers Day was celebrated on Sunday, 24th September so people were invited to take a big hop, skip or jump into their local creek or river. The “Big Jump” aims to reconnect people and communities to their local waterways.  Check out Kael (10) Keelee (7) and Seanna (9) Thompson jumping in the the Mary River at Grigor Bridge, Conondale in their Nippers gear – our Lifesavers of the Mary!! Two lucky entrants are in the running to win one of two junior kayaks kindly donated by BCF Gympie.

Mary River Month also includes the 2017 Spring in the Mary photo competition . There’s a special Rural category this year for images of agriculture, forestry and fishing in the catchment and Great Sandy Strait. We also have a Junior category and an open category. Get your entries in by the 6 November 2017 and come along to the Mary River Festival on the 11 November to see all entries on display and vote in the “People’s Choice”.  Download the flyer and entry form here. Thank you to Murray Views, Noosa Landcare, HQPlantations, Bos Rural and the Burnett Mary Regional Group for sponsoring the competition.

This year, Mary River Month will also include ‘Tell Mary’s Tales’ poetry and prose which also starts on World Rivers Day. The closing date for submissions will be 3rd November.  All poetry and prose is limited to one A4 page (1.5 spacing, 12 font) and a small photo of the area that inspired the work (optional).  All submissions will be numbered and displayed in a presentation folder on the MRCCC stand at the Festival with a selection of them presented in person.  Two numbers will be drawn out of the hat and the entrants will be presented with either a framed photo by Bob Simpson, or a copy of Tim Heard’s Australian Native Bee Book.  Click here for a copy of the entry form.
