Celebrate World Rivers Day with the Big Jump!

This Sunday at 2pm, people all around the Mary River catchment will be celebrating our river with the Big Jump. Take a photo of yourself, your friends and family doing the Big Jump, send it to maryrivermonth@mrccc.org.au and go in the draw to win two junior kayaks donated by BCF. The Big Jump is the Mary River Catchment community’s contribution to the global World Rivers Day event.

World Rivers Day, September 24th (as always falling on the last Sunday in September) will soon be here. Consequently, river advocates from around the globe are finalizing plans for this year’s World Rivers Day celebration, which has taken place annually since 2005.  Rivers in every country face an array of threats.  Celebration of this day promotes the active involvement of individuals and communities to ensure the health of rivers in the years ahead.

Some of the events planned around the world include:

– In South Korea, there will be the Korea-Japan NGO Wetland meeting where delegates are concerned about the construction of dams and barriers that prevent the flow of water in rivers and wetlands.

– In Canada, there are always massive BC Rivers Day celebrations across the Canadian province of British Columbia

– In England, there will be many activities including the 2nd annual TideFest that highlights and celebrates the recreational importance of the lower Thames to Londoners.

– Across Europe, there will be a host of activities along numerous great rivers from the Danube to the Rhine to the Douro.

– In India, there will be the massive “Rally for Rivers” that will span much of the country led by the Isha Foundation.

– In Ireland in Kilkenny a 3 day event around World Rivers Day will include a series of river walk and talks with local primary and secondary school students… all wrapped up with a celebratory river swim.

– In Malaysia, a large group of Kuala Lumpur communities will be undertaking an assortment of activities aimed at sustaining and restoring river life along the Bunus River

– In Bali, a series of events are being organized by the Bali Water Protection Program.

– In Brisbane, the International River Foundation will be supporting the “Water Stories” exhibition and the Melbourne University will be running a special event for children to kick off World Rivers Day weekend – while the Tamar Estuary is planning a clean-up of the Tamar River in Northern Tasmania.

So by participating in the Big Jump you are joining a global celebration of our rivers!
